About Us

FiberStory was founded by Larry Johnson in 2009 to focus on archiving the history of the fiber optic industry. Plans include the creation of an interactive website with educational activities directed to all levels of knowledge, as well as traveling displays of fiber optic artifacts and their stories.

Since 1990 Mr. Johnson has worked extensively on archiving key people and their stories about the history of fiber optics.  In 2001, Mr. Johnson was himself identified as a Luminary of the fiber optics industry for his role in being a leader in fiber optic training by Fiberoptic Product News. He has also co-authored a book on OTDRs titled Troubleshooting Optical-Fiber Networks as well as written numerous articles for trade journals. He has been currently archiving the history of Charles Kao (2009 Nobel Physics Award winner) and working on the 50th anniversary of Ted Maiman’s invention of the Laser with Kathleen Maiman.

Mr. Johnson is also Founder and Director of The Light Brigade, the world’s leading fiber optic training company, having trained over 35,000 students in its public and customized classes since his introduction to fiber optics in 1977.  Mr. Johnson has built a solid reputation as an expert in all aspects of design, installation, implementation, testing and measurement of fiber optic projects including the original design of the Microsoft’s fiber optic campus network, Southwest Fiber project, North Pacific Cable and many others.

Mr. Johnson has presented at key conferences worldwide, including the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC), Asia Pacific Conference, Supercomm, Electronicast and KMI conferences, OSP Showcase, Fiber in the Loop, ISA and numerous other professional symposia. He coordinates FTTH activities at the Optical Fiber Conference and at the ECOC Conferences and is actively involved with establishing fiber optic certifications for a host of industries and organizations.

Mr. Johnson is a member of the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society of Optical Engineering, the Society of Cable Television Engineers (SCTE) and the Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI). Since 1977 he has participated in the development of fiber optic standards and also was past chairman of the ETA’s fiber optic certifications used for installation, testing and measurement of network and physical plant.
